The ultimate Christmassy film with the famous ice-skating scene, starring Cary Grant, Loretta Young and David Niven, screened in the glorious nave of Bristol Cathedral, not far from the ice rink in Millennium Square. With an introduction by one of Cary Grant’s biggest fans, Col Needham, founder and CEO of IMDb.com, who includes two Cary Grant movies in his top 10 favourite films of all time.

A Christmas film to rival It’s a Wonderful Life, Cary Grant stars as Dudley, a guardian angel sent down to guide newly appointed Bishop Henry Brougham (David Niven) in his struggle to raise funds to build an elaborate new cathedral, when he beseeches God for help.

Dudley magically appears in answer to his prayers and does help him – but not in quite the way that he hopes for. In his eagerness to glorify his church and office, Henry neglects his own family.

Whilst Henry is busy with fundraising in the run up to Christmas, his wife, Julia (Loretta Young), spends more and more time with Dudley, who compensates for Henry’s romantic neglect by buying her the expensive hat she’s longing for and taking her open air ice-skating.

Don’t miss this once in a life-time opportunity to see The Bishop’s Wife inside the actual cathedral that Cary Grant visited in 1965 to help raise funds for the roof. Life imitates art: Cary Grant is Bristol Cathedral’s guardian angel.

The screening will be preceded by live music from Free Range Acappella and UWE Big Band, and comes with wrap around treats, including bubbly on arrival, hot chocolate and popcorn, plus a paid bar. What better way to get into the Christmas spirit?
