Cary Grant, one of Hollywood’s most debonair stars, was born Archibald Leach in Bristol in 1904. Many Bristolians are unaware that he grew up here and continued an enduring relationship with the city.

This walking tour retraces Archie’s hometown haunts and uncovers Bristol’s hidden cinema history in the places where it actually happened. Participants will be led on a guided tour of Bristol City Centre featuring the locations that inspired Archie’s journey from Horfield to Hollywood, and the spots where the Bristol Post photographed him on his many visits home, after he’d reinvented himself as Cary Grant. The tour will take just under two hours, covering a distance of roughly two miles, and will begin at Bristol Cathedral and end in Millennium Square next to the Cary Grant statue, the Christmas Fair and Ice Rink, where we toast Archie Leach with a glass of Prosecco and 20% drinks at the Après Bar.

It will carry on come rain or shine, so please bring what footwear and clothing you need to make the tour comfortable! We aim to make the tour as accessible as possible, and there will not be any stairs on the route. There will be a brief trip on No. 7 Boats cross-harbour ferry, but this is accessible to wheelchairs (but not mobility scooters).

Looking For Archie is part of the Being Human Festival taking place nationally 17 – 25 November 2017. Being Human is led by the School of Advanced Study, University of London in partnership with the Arts & Humanities Research Council and the British Academy.
