‘Everybody wants to be Cary Grant. Even I want to be Cary Grant.’ (Cary Grant)
Our actor-led theatre walk launched in November 2023, to coincide with the launch of ITVX’s new 4 part drama ARCHIE – which was filmed in Liverpool! But Bristol is where Archie Leach was born and where the seeds of Cary Grant were sown.
Walk the streets that Archie knew as a boy and that Cary returned to, again and again, for the rest of his life. Theatres and cinemas, hotels and restaurants, and the harbour – places that helped form and transform him into a Hollywood star and style icon. An extraordinary story that’s also threaded through with secrets and lies as enduring as Archie’s Bristol landscapes.
“another fabulous tour” — Kathryn Davis, MD Visit West
“brilliant tour guide” — Veronica Jones on Facebook
Led by Show Of Strength Theatre Company, renowned for their dynamic performances focusing on true and amazing Bristol stories, this theatre walk builds on the highly successful Looking for Archie Walking Tour which was originally developed as part of the Being Human Festival back in 2017. After the success of our sold out pilot, which took place in November 2023, again with support from Being Human and UWE Bristol, we’re delighted that the tour has been added to SoS’s slate of theatre walks!
The walk departs from the Cary Grant statue in Millennium Square on Bristol’s harbourside, takes roughly one and a half hours, covering a distance of about 1-1.5 miles and ends at Castle Park in Bristol city centre.
The walk will take place come rain or shine, so please bring what footwear and clothing you need to make yourself comfortable! This gentle walk is wheelchair accessible, with no big climbs, and there will not be any stairs on the route.
Bristol based professional theatre company Show Of Strength Theatre Company was co-founded by Creative Producer Sheila Hannon in Bedminster, Bristol in 1986 and has produced new work in non-theatre spaces for over thirty years, creating informal, intimate and accessible new venues in Bristol, including the Hen & Chicken (1989) and Tobacco Factory (1998) – both still flourishing. Since 2016, Show Of Strength have produced well-researched, highly-successful theatre based walking tours in Bath, Bedminster, Clifton, Bristol harbourside, St George (2022) and (2023) Keynsham. – all areas with a wealth of history, stories and characters.
