This tour is sold out, but due to popular demand we’ve put on an additional “Searching for Archie” tour at 3.30pm that starts and finishes at the Royal Marriott Hotel (where Cary Grant honeymooned with Dyan Cannon) – it won’t be finished in time for afternoon tea at Avon Gorge, but it will end with tea/coffee and cookies at the Marriott.

Join festival director Charlotte Crofts (Associate Professor, UWE Filmmaking) on this fascinating tour of Cary Grant’s Bristol. Born Archibald Leach in Bristol in 1904, Cary Grant went on to become one of Hollywood’s most debonair stars. Whilst many Bristolians are aware that he grew up here, not everyone realises his enduring relationship with the city. This walking tour retraces Archie’s hometown haunts and uncovers Bristol’s hidden cinema history in the places where it actually happened. Participants will be led on a guided tour of Bristol City Centre featuring the locations that inspired Archie’s journey from Horfield to Hollywood, and the spots where the Bristol Post photographed him on his many visits home, after he’d reinvented himself as Cary Grant.

The tour will take just under two hours, covering a distance of roughly two miles, and will begin at Watershed and end in Millennium Square next to the Cary Grant statue, in the midst of the Christmas Fair and Ice Rink, where we toast Archie Leach with a glass of Prosecco and 30% off drinks at the Après Bar.

It will carry on come rain or shine, so please bring what footwear and clothing you need to make the tour comfortable! We aim to make the tour as accessible as possible, and there will not be any stairs on the route. There will be a brief trip on No. 7 Boats cross-harbour ferry, but this is accessible to wheelchairs (but not mobility scooters).

This event is in honour of Bristol’s recent designation as a UNESCO City of Film, in recognition of the city’s vibrant screen heritage, of which Cary Grant is one of our brightest stars.
