Looking For Archie: A Walking Tour of Cary Grant’s Bristol

Join us on this fascinating tour of Cary Grant’s Bristol led by Pam Beddard. Born Archibald Leach in Bristol in 1904, Cary Grant went on to become one of Hollywood’s most debonair stars. Whilst many Bristolians are aware that he grew up here, not everyone realises his enduring relationship with the city. This walking tour retraces Archie’s hometown haunts and uncovers Bristol’s hidden cinema history in the places where it actually happened. Participants will be led on a guided tour of Bristol City Centre featuring the locations that inspired Archie’s journey from Horfield to Hollywood, and the spots where the Bristol Post photographed him on his many visits home, after he’d reinvented himself as Cary Grant.
A fun and informative exploration of the city centre locations associated with the Bristol-born film star. Meet outside the Bristol Marriott Royal Hotel, College Green at 1.45pm – the walk will start promptly at 2pm. The tour will take roughly one and a half hours, covering a distance of about two miles, and will end next to the Cary Grant statue in Millennium Square (at roughly 3.30pm)
The tour will take place come rain or shine, so please bring what footwear and clothing you need to make the tour comfortable! We aim to make the tour as accessible as possible, and there will not be any stairs on the route. This gentle walk is wheelchair accessible, with no big climbs. Your knowledgable guide will shine a new light on Bristol places closely associated with the boy and man.
